ATLANTA (TND) — Emory Healthcare, the largest hospital system in Georgia, announced to its employees this week that Juneteenth would become a paid company holiday, taking the place of Christmas Eve.The update, penned by CEO Joon S. Lee, explained that in order to add Juneteenth, the company needed to clear another holiday from its schedule.

[Emory Healthcare] currently observes nine paid holidays each year, while other Atlanta health systems average six paid holidays,” Lee wrote. “To minimize impact to patient care, we will not be adding another paid holiday to our calendar. Rather, beginning January 2024, we will remove Christmas Eve from our holiday calendar and replace it with Juneteenth.”

The announcement continued, noting that employees still have the option to use paid time off to observe the holiday. Christmas Eve 2023 remains a paid holiday, according to the message.Lee noted in his message that the decision was made based on employee feedback after the company solicited insight from employees about holiday observances. However, some employees expressed frustration over the move, noting that Black employees did not ask to have Christmas Eve taken off the holiday calendar.
